Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 1 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Midnapore Lok Sabha constituency Agnimitra Paul said on Wednesday that Kunal Ghosh's removal from the post of Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary seems to be like a conflict between TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and the latter's nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
"To me, it seems like a conflict between Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. This is not about the expulsion of Kunal Ghosh, this is to see who will retain power in the party, Mamata Banerjee or her nephew. Mamata Banerjee got the opportunity now and removed Abhishek Banerjee's right hand Kunal Ghosh," Paul said speaking to ANI on Wednesday.
Reminding Kunal Ghosh of his association with the Saradha chit-fund scam, Paul said that earlier Ghosh used to claim that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the biggest beneficiary of the scam before he became the spokesperson of the TMC.
"Kunal Ghosh has been convicted for 3.5 years and his case is still going on. During his trials, he would always say that Mamata Banerjee was the biggest beneficiary of the Saradha Chit-fund scam. Then he became the Chief Spokesperson of Mamata Banerjee's party. Today, he has been sacked," the BJP leader said.
Kunal Ghosh was acquitted in the case related to the Saradha Chit-fund scam by a special MP/MLA court in February.
Comparing the TMC with a local drain, the BJP MLA from Asansol South said, "TMC party is not even similar to a locality's high drain but only a small drain. We are from the BJP ocean. We do not have any stake into what is happening at a small drain in a village."
The TMC on Wednesday removed former party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh from the post of General Secretary hours after he shared the stage and heaped praise on BJP Kolkata North candidate Tapas Ray.
"Recently, Mr. Kunal Ghosh has been expressing views that do not align with those of the party. It is important to clarify that these are his personal opinions and should not be attributed to the party. Only statements issued from AITC headquarters should be considered the official position of the party," a press release from the TMC read.
"Mr. Ghosh was previously relieved from his role as party spokesperson. Now, he has been removed from the position of General Secretary of the state organization. We urge all media outlets not to conflate his views with those of the party, as doing so may necessitate legal action," it added.
