New Delhi [India], May 3 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended an Income Tax officer in Mumbai after he was caught while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh from a complainant.
The bribe was allegedly solicited in exchange for issuing a lower Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) certificate for the sale of a property belonging to the complainant's maternal uncle who was an NRI, the CBI said.
According to the allegations, the accused demanded 2 per cent of the total property deal value, which amounted to Rs 5.04 crore. After negotiations, the demand was reduced to 1 per cent of the deal value. Eventually, the accused agreed to accept a bribe of Rs 4 lakh.
The CBI, acting on the complaint, set a trap and apprehended the accused while he was accepting the bribe in his Mumbai office on Thursday.
In subsequent searches conducted at the accused's office and residential premises in Mumbai, the CBI recovered Rs 15 lakh in cash, gold ornaments, and documents related to investments in both immovable and movable properties. These findings are currently under scrutiny as part of the ongoing investigation, the agency said.
"The arrest underscores the CBI's commitment to rooting out corruption and upholding integrity within government institutions. Investigations into the matter are ongoing as the CBI continues its efforts to maintain transparency and accountability," it stated.
