Congress appoints Charan Das Mahant as member of Screening Committee ahead of Chhattisgarh polls

New Delhi [India], September 11 : Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday approved the proposal for the appointment of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly Speaker Charan Das Mahant as a member of the Screening Committee for the upcoming Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections.
"Hon'ble Congress President has approved the proposal for the appointment of Shri Charan Das Mahant as member of the Screening Committee for the ensuing Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections-2023, with immediate effect," a press release issued by the Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal stated on Monday.
The party also announced its Core Committee and Election Campaign Committee on Sunday. While the Core Committee will be chaired by Kumari Selja, the Election Campaign Committee will be chaired by Charan Das Mahant.

Earlier in August, Chhattisgarh Congress in-charge Kumari Selja said that she was confident that Congress would win 75 seats in the state assembly elections.
"We know and looking at the enthusiasm that people have on the ground and we can say with full confidence that this time we have to win at least 75 seats. A report says that Chhattisgarh is a state where 40 lakh people rose above BPL, so you can imagine that the neediest has been taken care of by our government and in the same way every our government has given something or the other to every class to uplift them, so our target is to win at least 75," Congress in-charge Kumari Selja said.
The Chhattisgarh Assembly election is scheduled to be held later this year. The Congress which is in power in the state seeks to retain its hold for the second term. The party is in direct contest with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state.
