Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], October 11 : Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday called for justice in the wake of the alleged suicide of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, urging the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central and Haryana governments to "speak with the bereaved family, respect their sentiments and ensure justice is delivered."
Speaking to reporters after visiting the officer's residence and meeting his family, Punjab CM said, "The family is demanding justice. I request the Chief Minister of Haryana and the Central Government to stand with this family. You can't disregard the law to protect one person. No one is above the law. Justice should be done."
The Punjab CM further said that he had approached the Chandigarh Administrator and urged him to intervene in the matter.
"I met the Governor and requested him to intervene. You're the Chandigarh Administrator, and you should sit with the officers and the family together and talk. I'll talk to him (Haryana CM)...now it's clear that a community is being deliberately targeted as part of a conspiracy. They didn't come through any recommendations. They cleared the UPSC," he added.
Earlier in the day, CM Mann visited the residence of the deceased IPS officer in Chandigarh.
IPS officer Y Puran Kumar allegedly died by suicide on October 7 at his residence in Chandigarh. In a 'final note' reportedly left behind, he accused eight senior police officers, including Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, of "blatant caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation and atrocities."
His wife, Senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, has demanded that an FIR be registered against the DGP and SP, citing serious allegations of harassment and discrimination.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Kumari Selja also arrived at the Haryana IPS officer's residence to meet his family and said that these are testing times for the "entire Dalit community" and the whole society.
"I dont understand how the government is working. Everyone should act as one when it comes to justice... When his family reached the mortuary, they found that his dead body had been shifted elsewhere... All evidence is right in front, and the whole nation knows what is going on... These are testing times for the entire Dalit community and the whole society. Such a high-ranking officer has been forced into such a situation..." said Congress MP Kumari Selja.
Earlier, Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur stated that the post-mortem would be conducted only after obtaining consent from the family.
"The post-mortem will be started after the consent of the family. We are yet to receive a message from the family. A team of doctors are present here. Nothing can be done without the consent of the family. As soon as we get a go-ahead from the family, the post-mortem will begin..." she said.
Meanwhile, the Haryana Government transferred Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya, who is facing accusations along with seven other senior police officers of the Haryana police in the death of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar.
According to a Haryana Government order, Superintendent of police, Narcotics Bureau, Surinder Bhoria, will replace Bijarniya as Rohtak SP.
Earlier, the family of the deceased officer had demanded the immediate arrest of the DGP and Rohtak SP.
