Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) [India], September 3 : Amid the clash that broke out between the advocates and police in UP's Hapur, Vice President of Bar Council Uttar Pradesh, Anurag Pandey on Sunday said that lawyers across the state will protest against this incident on Monday.
This comes after tension escalated between the police and lawyers as Hapur Bar Association's officials and members earlier on Tuesday were staging a protest over an alleged 'fabricated' case filed against a woman lawyer and her father and police resorted to lathi-charge against lawyers.
Reacting to this, Pandey said, "Now we will fight this battle in a phased manner and tomorrow all the lawyers of the state will stage a silent protest. There will be no work tomorrow."
The Vice President of UP Bar Council also informed that they'll protest stepwise.
"First, we'll burn the 'effigy' of the District Magistrate (DM) and senior Superintendent of Police (SP), then the effigy of the Director General of Police (DGP) and Home Secretary and at last the effigy of the Chief Minister (CM). Even after this, if we do not get justice then we will protest infront of the UP Assembly," Pandey told ANI.
Pandey also noted that along with all the advocates of the UP Bar Council, advocates of other state Bar Councils are also in support of them.
Earlier, the Special Director General in charge of Law and Order Prashant Kumar said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the advocates-police clash incident that occurred on Tuesday, adding that the report will be submitted in seven days.
"A clash broke out between advocates and police in Hapur yesterday. A SIT has been formed to investigate this matter. It will be headed by the Commissioner, Meerut. IG Meerut and DIG Moradabad will be the other members. The SIT is to submit its report in seven days," the Special DG said on Wednesday.
Appealing to the advocates to maintain peace, Prashant Kumar said, "Our district administration is in touch with Bar Council members. I appeal to everybody to maintain law and order and to support the administration".
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) strongly condemned the incident of lathi charge by the Police on lawyers in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh and sought to investigate the incident and bring the guilty police officers to justice.
The Supreme Court Bar Association also called upon the Bar Council of India and all other State Bar Councils to take necessary steps to protect the rights of advocates and to ensure that they are able to discharge their duties without fear of intimidation or harassment.
