Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], July 8 : Asserting that no criminal or rapist will be spared under the current administration, West Bengal BJP State President and Rajya Sabha MP Shamik Bhattacharya on Wednesday backed the police action in the Baruipur encounter, stating that the government has fulfilled its electoral promise of "Fear out, Trust in" (Bhoy out, Bhorosa in).
The remarks follow the encounter of Prabhash Mondal, a prime accused in the Baruipur minor's rape and murder case, who was killed in a police shootout after attempting to snatch an officer's weapon and open fire at the police team.
Speaking to ANI, Bhattacharya emphasised the change in the state's governance and security approach.
"No criminal will be spared. Before the elections, a promise was made to the women of West Bengal--'Fear out, Trust in'. This was the Prime Minister's message. Whatever we had to say in our resolution letter and our manifesto, we have fulfilled," Bhattacharya said.
Highlighting the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who also holds the Home portfolio, the BJP leader said the government is acting as per its mandate.
"Currently, Suvendu Adhikari is the CM, and along with that, he is also the Home Minister; so today, the government has taken the step it was supposed to take. The rest is all out in the open before the people of West Bengal," he added.
Drawing a contrast with the handling of the Kamduni case, Bhattacharya also launched a scathing attack on the previous state government, alleging that the previous regime's inquiries were biased and failed to provide justice to victims.
"We also saw Kamduni here--how the previous government conducted the inquiry, and they did it in such a way that the main accused was released just to please a specific community. The Kamduni victim did not receive justice. But today, that situation has changed. A new government has arrived," he asserted.
Invoking the legacy of the Jan Sangh founder, the BJP State President declared that the state has entered a new era of accountability.
"On the land of Syama Prasad, the government of Syama Prasad has arrived. Now, no criminal and no rapist will be spared," Bhattacharya stated.
Meanwhile, Mondal's mother and wife arrived at the subdivision hospital in Baruipur. The dead body is currently being kept in the hospital and will soon be taken for the postmortem.
