Pune (Maharashtra) [India], July 9 : NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule on Wednesday expressed concerns over the Election Commission of India's (ECI) decision to conduct Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar electoral rolls, saying that it is "unfortunate" that Indian democracy is facing questions regarding election processes.
The NCP-SCP MP further stated that the Election Commission has an opportunity to demonstrate its impartiality and ensure the process is free from political influence.
"It is unfortunate that in a country like ours, which is a vibrant democracy, today it is going through so many questions regarding the election process. It is a great opportunity for the Election Commission of India to come and show full transparency and reassure the country that it is not influenced by any political party or government," Sule told reporters.
Since the announcement of the SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar, the opposition parties have raised their concerns.
Earlier today, Congress MP and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi, along with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, led the 'Bihar Bandh' protest in Patna against the Election Commission of India's (ECI) decision to undertake the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.
Speaking at the Bihar Bandh rally, Rahul Gandhi warned that the pattern of electoral manipulation seen in Maharashtra could be repeated in Bihar.
He said, "The way there was vote theft in the Maharashtra elections, a similar attempt is being made in Bihar."
Gandhi also raised questions over the rise in voter numbers between the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Maharashtra, alleging that all newly added votes went to the BJP. He claimed that the INDIA alliance's poor performance in the Maharashtra Assembly polls, despite a Lok Sabha majority, prompted a deeper data review that revealed suspicious voting patterns.
