Sikkim Assembly budget session begins today; CM Tamang to present FY27 budget

Gangtok (Sikkim), July 20 : The four-day Budget Session of the Eleventh Sikkim Legislative Assembly will begin on Monday, with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who also holds the Finance portfolio, set to present the General Budget for the financial year 2026-27.
According to the official List of Business, Governor Om Prakash Mathur will address the House at 11 am, following which several Bills will be introduced before the presentation of the first stage of the General Budget.
Among the key legislative business, Health Minister GT Dhungel will introduce the Sikkim Medical Council for Indian System of Medicine Bill, 2026. The bill seeks to establish a statutory framework for the regulation of practitioners of Indian systems of medicine in the state.
Education and Skill Development Minister Raju Basnet will introduce three Bills related to the education sector. The Sikkim Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2026, seeks to amend the existing law governing private universities in the state. The Board of Open Schooling and Skill Education Sikkim (Amendment) Bill, 2026 proposes changes to the existing legislation governing the Board, while the Board of Open Schooling and Vocational Education, Sikkim Bill, 2026 seeks to establish a statutory framework for open schooling and vocational education.
Chief Minister Tamang will also introduce the National Council for Skill Education, Sikkim (Repealing) Bill, 2026, which seeks to repeal the existing legislation relating to the National Council for Skill Education in the state.
He will also seek leave to introduce the Sikkim Fire and Emergency Services (Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposing amendments to the existing law governing fire and emergency services in Sikkim.
The Budget Session is scheduled to continue till July 23. Tuesday's agenda includes a discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the Governor's Address, the Chief Minister's reply, and voting on the Motion of Thanks.
