May 05, 2022

Dhaka (Bangladesh), May 05 (ANI): Different Islamic parties, civil society groups and NGOs held protests across Bangladesh to observe Doppa Day in solidarity with the Uyghur Community of Xinjiang in China. Every year on May 5, Uyghur Community around the world observes and celebrates this day. Doppa is a traditional hat worn by Uyghur to celebrate and protect their cultural heritage. To mark the day, an NGO named Open Dialogue Bangladesh organized a street play in front of the National Press Club. The theatre artists creatively used Uyghur masks and Doppa hats to convey the sufferings of Uyghurs, which still continues in Xinjiang, violating all provisions of the UN Genocide Convention. Similarly, another NGO organised a cycle rally and also a protest meeting in which students of different schools and colleges, journalists and leaders of various political parties took part. Later, a voluntary organization pasted posters and painted walls all across the Dhaka University campus, depicting human rights violations against Uyghur Muslims. It is believed that around two million Uyghurs and other minorities have been placed under detention Centres where they are subjected to indoctrination, sexual abuse and even forced sterilization. China, on the other hand, says that the Centres are necessary to prevent Religious Extremism and Terrorism.
