Deadly crackdown in PoJK sparks outrage, UN Intervention Sought
Jun 09, 2026
PoJK, 09 JUNE 2026: Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir has been rocked by deadly violence after security forces allegedly opened fire during anti-government protests in Rawalakot, leaving several people dead, including protesters and law enforcement personnel. The unrest stems from growing anger over unfulfilled public demands and a controversial dispute over 12 reserved legislative seats ahead of regional elections. As allegations of excessive force and human rights violations mount, prominent PoJK human rights activist Dr Amjad Ayub Mirza has appealed to the United Nations for urgent international intervention, warning that the situation is rapidly deteriorating. Members of the Kashmiri diaspora, human rights activists, and community representatives have protested outside the Pakistani Consulate in Bradford, seeking to draw international attention to the reported situation in PoJK, while similar demonstrations have also been reported in other parts of Europe. The deadly clashes occurred just a day before a region-wide strike scheduled for June 9, called by protest groups demanding fulfilment of long-pending public demands and accountability for the violence. Markets and businesses in Muzaffarabad have remained shut in support of the strike call, reflecting growing public anger across the region.
