From Tobacco to Bananas: Gujarat Farmer’s natural farming success story

Oct 23, 2025

Farmers across India are embracing natural farming, a sustainable and profitable alternative to chemicals. In Vadodara, Gujarat, Patel Shailesh Bhai of Ranchhodpura shifted from tobacco to Subhash Palekar Natural Farming, now cultivating bananas, turmeric, and jamphal naturally. This change boosted income, reduced input costs, and allowed the family to share cow dung and urine with nearby farmers for free. Their naturally grown produce, especially bananas, is in high demand locally. ATMA, a district-level agency under the Ministry of Agriculture, supports farmers by providing training, resources, and guidance, linking research with the farming community. Gujarat’s community-driven efforts are emerging as a model for sustainable and prosperous rural development.
