Glacier impact exposes irregularities in major power project in PoGB

Feb 18, 2026

PoGB, 18 February 2026: - For decades, residents of Hunza in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan have faced severe load-shedding, with no major project easing the crisis. In Hassanabad, the Shishper Glacier recently damaged two power houses, including the Chapursan project. Debris remains at the site, and amid restoration delays, irregularities in the project’s execution have also surfaced. While the glacier’s impact worsened the situation, questions now center on accountability. For the people of Hunza, the larger concern remains unchanged - decades of darkness and continued load shedding, with promises of relief still unfulfilled.
