Mega Desilting Drive Strengthens Irrigation Network Across Gujarat

May 18, 2026

Gujarat is undertaking a large-scale desilting and canal rejuvenation campaign across 1,474 locations to strengthen irrigation infrastructure, enhance water storage capacity, and ensure smooth water flow throughout the state. So far, more than 22.1 million cubic metres of earthwork has been completed, while nearly 4,223 kilometres of canals have been cleaned. Around 88 and 96 heavy machines have been deployed to accelerate restoration and water conservation efforts. The statewide campaign focuses on deepening canals, reservoirs, and river channels while removing silt and vegetation that obstruct water flow. Officials say the effort has improved irrigation capacity, ensured better water distribution, and strengthened long-term water conservation in agricultural areas.
