Mobile schools bring education to children of Agariya salt workers in Rann of Kutch

Feb 20, 2026

In the vast white expanse of the Little Rann of Kutch, Agariya salt workers migrate for months to harvest salt under extreme conditions, once leaving children’s education disrupted. To bridge this gap, Gujarat government-run mobile schools—popularly called Rannshalas—now move with these families, delivering education directly to the desert. Siblings Jayesh and Rinku are among those benefiting, as these classrooms operate close to their settlements, ensuring uninterrupted learning despite migration. This initiative is transforming lives by bringing schoolbooks to salt pans, nurturing confidence, sustaining aspirations, and opening pathways to a more secure future. In one of India’s harshest landscapes, education now travels on wheels, proving that learning can continue anywhere, even in the heart of a salt desert.
