Nepal PM Oli Conducts Aerial Survey as Drought Crisis Deepens in Madhesh

Jul 26, 2025

Mahottari (Nepal), July 26 (ANI): Nepal’s deepening water crisis has prompted Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to conduct an aerial survey of Madhesh Province—the nation's agricultural backbone—now suffering from a failed monsoon. Once lush with paddy, the fields lie parched, forcing the government to declare Madhesh a disaster-hit zone for three months. At an event in Mahottari, PM Oli announced the installation of 500 deep boring water systems to ease irrigation woes, though groundwater depletion raises concerns. Madhesh, contributing over 13% to Nepal’s GDP, now faces declining crop output and farmer distress. Nationwide, erratic weather has triggered floods, landslides, and flash disasters like the Bhotekoshi flood. As Nepal warms faster than the global average, the government’s timely action is critical for protecting lives and livelihoods.
