Scholar Preserves Gujarat’s Tribal Soul Through Lullabies
Mar 27, 2026
From the forests of Dang to academic corridors in Gandhinagar, 34-year-old Jeetendra Gavli has transformed his childhood memories into a significant research effort. Documenting over 150 tribal lullabies, known as halarda, he has preserved the fading oral heritage of South Gujarat. As part of his PhD, he travelled across six districts, studying nine tribal communities, including Kokna, Vasava, Tadvi, and Gamit, many of which lack written scripts. His work highlights how these lullabies shape early language, rhythm, emotions, and cultural identity. The son of a farmer and the only PhD holder in his village, Gavli’s research is a heartfelt tribute to his mother and grandmother, ensuring that these traditional songs endure for future generations.
