Ukhrul (Manipur), July 09 (ANI): ): For the first time in its history, amid the pandemic, Manipur’s Ukhrul district is buzzing with apple talk. Apples were not cultivated much in Manipur’s Ukhrul district due to low yield and demand. Meet the young farmers- Ringphami Thingshung, a resident of Hungpung (Dungrei), Somayo Kashung from Shokvao Village, Sandosh Horam from Litan who have brought apple revolution in the district. These young farmers confined themselves at their apple orchards nurturing and caring for the apple saplings. The farmers are growing low-chilling varieties of apples including Anna, Dorsett Golden, and Sun Fuji in their orchards. In 2019, around 20 youths from the district attended a workshop on apple cultivation in Himachal Pradesh organized by North Eastern Council (NEC)and sponsored through the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in a mission to reach out to Northeast villages to experiment with a pilot project of apple cultivation.
