It is believed that women's capacity to utilise fat as a fuel is compromised by the oestrogen deficit that results from menopause. According to a study done at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Jyvaskyla, neither menopausal status nor blood oestrogen levels reliably predict how quickly middle-aged women can burn fat either at rest or working out. Increased fat utilisation did not translate into improved glucose tolerance.
