Prayagraj (UP), April 16 (ANI): Mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in front of media in Prayagraj on April 16. Brother-duo were killed when three people opened fire at them near a medical college in Prayagraj.The incident happened while Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf were being taken for medical checkup. UP police arrested 3 assailants on spot involved in the crime, who posed as media personnel.ANI video journalist Vikash Srivastava was also shot in the leg during the incident as Atiq, Ashraf answered his questions. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called a high-level meeting and ordered a high-level inquiry in the case. Hours after the murder, Uttar Pradesh government imposed Section 144 across the state. CM also gave instructions for the formation of a three-member Judicial Inquiry Commission into the matter. Notably, on April 13, UP STF killed Atiq’s son Asad Ahmed and his aide Ghulam in an encounter. Gangster Ghulam’s mother hailed UP police’s action and said that encounter was “absolutely correct”."Nahi le gaye to nahi gaye" were Atiq’s last words, as he talked about the funeral of his son. Atiq was the main accused in 2005 Raju Pal murder case, Umesh Pal murder case which happened in Feb 2023. Prayagraj Special Court had sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2007 kidnapping case of Umesh Pal. Atiq and Ashraf were remanded to police custody for four days in the Umesh Pal murder case.
