From Rapper to Revolutionary: The Rise of Balen Shah in Nepal

Mar 04, 2026

Kathmandu (Nepal), March 04 (ANI): As Nepal gears up to vote and make history, one name dominates conversations on political disruption and generational change: Balen Shah. In a system long controlled by party heavyweights, Balen did the unthinkable. Armed with a microphone, a civil engineering degree, and a powerful social media presence, he rewrote the political script in Nepal. In 2022, the rapper-turned-reformer won the mayoral race in Kathmandu, defeating candidates from the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist). No party symbol. No dynasty. Just a digital campaign and a promise to clean up the capital. For many young voters, he wasn’t just a candidate he was a statement. Frustrated with corruption and political instability, Gen Z rallied behind his direct, data-driven style. 35-year-old Balen began his election campaign from Janakpur on January 19, a day after formally joining the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). Poised to take center stage in Nepali politics, the young candidate promises change — but one thing remains constant: his signature black rectangular sunglasses.
