Taiwan sentences father-son duo in China spy case
Aug 30, 2024
A father and son from Taiwan, surnamed Huang, were sentenced to eight years in prison for leaking sensitive military information about Taiwan's annual Han Kuang drills to China. The duo, recruited by Chinese intelligence in 2015, enlisted two Taiwanese military officers, Yeh and Su, who provided eight classified documents detailing Taiwan's defence strategies. In exchange, the Huangs received NT$1.71 million, while the officers were paid smaller amounts. The Taiwan High Court found the Huangs guilty of violating national security laws, and while their sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court, a retrial was ordered for Yeh and Su. This case underscores the ongoing threat of Chinese espionage amid heightened cross-strait tensions.
