Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 12 (ANI): The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 passed in the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) with 125 in favour and 105 against the bill. The Bill will now be sent to President Ram Nath Kovind for approval. While speaking to media in Shillong on December 11, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma said, “When we went to meet the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, we did not know any of these provisions whether he will accept or whether there will be any provisions that will insulate the state of Meghalaya.” “Once the bill came out, we realised that our concern about the fact-‘Will Bangladeshi people from Hindu or other religion, non-Muslim religions continue to come in to the state?’. This fact of us was addressed by saying no and as per the information 2014 is a cut off and any application which is pending now is the only ones that will be looked at,” he added. “From our state there are hardly any applications of individuals who want citizenship who are from Bangladesh as we speak right now. The question of many people coming in future doesn’t even arise because those applications will not be acceptable at all,” he further stated.
