Kathmandu (Nepal), July 24 (ANI): In response to a prolonged and severe drought, the Government of Nepal has declared Madhesh Province a disaster crisis zone. The decision was made during an emergency cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. A cabinet meeting today declared Madhesh Province a disaster crisis zone. This allows the government to immediately mobilize disaster-related budgets and resources. The decision came following a proposal by the Ministry of Home Affairs, after a severe drought impacted all eight districts along the Terai belt Nepal’s most fertile and arable region. Groundwater levels are receding, causing hand-pumps and wells to dry up. There is a severe shortage of drinking water, and even water for cleaning is unavailable. The government, after consultations at various levels, has deployed multiple teams to address the crisis. Madhesh Province contributes over 13 percent to Nepal’s GDP, with agriculture accounting for more than a third of its economic output. Major crops include rice, vegetables, fruits, and spices.
