Is Joshimath viable for living? Team of scientists inspects land subsidence-affected areas

Chamoli (Uttarakhand), Jan 14 (ANI): A team of engineers on January 14 inspected Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli, where land subsidence has occurred. The team conducted a physical inspection at houses where cracks have appeared due to land subsidence and pasted warning posters in the houses which are unusable. “Assessment of the 4000 buildings in 9 wards in Joshimath being done. We are assessing the details of the buildings including how the building was constructed, what materials were used, was it according to the set norms,” said, CBRI Chief Engineer Dr Ajay Chaurasia. Team of environmentalists and climate scientists also conducted inspection of land subsidence-affected areas of Joshimath on January 14. They have made environmental and ecological assessments and also assessed the water quality of Joshimath. “Condition of houses where cracks have appeared isn't good. Government has already rehabilitated those people. We're seeing if there's a possibility of more land subsidence or if the land can be restored to its original state. It's a matter of challenge for us,” Scientist Dr JC Kuniyal told ANI.
